Facial Volume Loss

What Is Facial Volume Loss?

Facial volume loss is usually noticeable in the form of hollow/sunken cheeks, tear troughs or temples and thin lips. As we age, many changes in the face occur. The underlying bone starts to recede, muscles begin to sag and stretch, fat pads redistribute and skin becomes more lax.  These age-related changes can give off a grim, sad, or tired appearance. Hollow cheeks appear to recede inward into the facial bones, instead of projecting outward. If you are in your 30s or older, you might notice that your lips are becoming thinner and deflated. As we age, the bone resorbs and thins. You might also experience loose skin around the jawline, which gives off the appearance of a weak chin.

What Does Volume Loss Look Like?

As facial volume diminishes, the skin acquires lines or wrinkles due to collagen and facial fat depletion. There is a hollowing around the eye sockets along with sunken temples, flattened cheeks, and loose skin around the jawline, better known as jowls. Fine lines appear on the lips and around the nose. Nasolabial folds form around the corners of the nose/mouth and oral commissures develop just beneath the corner of the mouth. The skin appears drier, thinner, and less pliable and vibrant.

What Are the Causes?

As with most aesthetic concerns, the loss of facial volume often results from the aging process. Not only do our bodies produce less collagen (which gives skin its elasticity and plumpness), but we lose subcutaneous fat as we grow older. A sudden loss of weight, smoking and sunbathing can also accentuate this look. Thin lips occur for the same reason that your skin begins to sag over time. Though it can be genetic, lost collagen and hyaluronic acid (HA) can also thin the lips. Collagen and HA give our lips plumpness, moisture and an overall look of youthfulness.*
