What Are Age Spots?
Age / sun spots (technically called solar lentigos) are brown freckle-like marks caused by excessive sun exposure. Age spots commonly appear on the face, chest, shoulders, hands and arms where the body gets the most sun. Ultraviolet (UV) rays accelerate the production of melanin, which gives skin its brown pigmentation. Sun spots or age spots form when overactive pigment cells and melanin groups in higher concentrations. Often, people can date them back to a specific sunburn.
What Causes Age Spots?
When we expose our skin to ultraviolet (UV) light, the production of melanin is accelerated. Melanin is the pigment in our skin that produces a darker color. When you lie out in the sun or go to a tanning bed, your skin becomes more tan thanks to melanin. When exposed to frequent UV rays over a long period of time, higher concentrations of melanin will group, and age spots will start to pop up.
How Are They Treated?
Although age spots are mostly harmless, it does not mean they should be ignored. Dr. Amy Wechsler provides aesthetic treatments to rejuvenate the skin. She uses a comprehensive and individualized approach to treating your skin which may include the Fraxel® or a TCA application, which is the precise application of an acid to reduce pigmented cells.* If you would rather not see age spots when you look in the mirror, schedule a consultation with Dr. Wechsler to feel better about yourself and your skin.
