What Is Acne?

Acne is the term for pimples, breakouts and complexion problems that trouble many teenagers, adults and even young children. It can develop on the face, neck, chest and back. It comes in all shapes and sizes; the most common types are whiteheads, blackheads, cysts, pustules (larger whiteheads), and papules (pink bumps).

What Are the Treatment Options?

Acne can always be treated. Dr. Wechsler uses a combination of topical treatments, oral treatments, laser treatments and chemical peels, in addition to lifestyle adjustments, i.e.,

  • Topical treatments (Topical retinoids, e.g., Differin, Retin-A, Tazorac; Topical antibiotics, e.g., clindamycin, erythromycin; benzoyl peroxide; azelaic acid)
  • Oral treatments (oral antibiotics e.g., doxycycline and minocycline; Accutane (isotretinoin); oral contraceptive pills; spironolactone/aldactone
  • Laser treatments (Isolaz and Regenlite for active acne; Vbeam and Fraxel for marks and scars)
  • Chemical peels with salicylic acid
  • Injections of dilute steroid for acne cysts (intralesional kenalog injections)
  • Drainage of blackheads and whiteheads

What Is Regenlite®

Also known as the N-lite laser, the versatile Regenlite is an efficacious treatment option for acne. Effective on all skin types, this laser reduces acne-causing bacteria and stimulates the small blood vessels near the surface of the skin. This triggers Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 or TGF-β1, which reduces inflammation and increases collagen production.* The handheld laser leaves healthy skin cells unharmed. This quick procedure can be done over your lunch break and requires no downtime.

What Is Isolaz®

Another treatment that’s effective for all skin types is a machine called Isolaz. Isolaz therapy can effectively treat acne comfortably and reliably, providing quick and long-lasting clearance.* This treatment targets deep into the pores and has been proven to reduce lesions by over 75% within two months for patients who have not responded to antibiotics, topical products or lasers for their condition.* Isolaz treatments usually take only 15 to 30 minutes and require little to no downtime.

What Are the Main Types of Acne Scars?

Scars resulting from acne are identified as either hypertrophic/keloid or atrophic/depressed. Hypertrophic/keloid scars develop when the body produces too much collagen as acne wounds heal. They look like a bump of raised tissue on the surface of the skin. Atrophic/depressed scars are caused by a loss of tissue. Often referred to as “icepick” or “boxcar” scars, they appear either as small, visible indentations in the skin or wider and deeper depressions. “Boxcar” scars are depressions that are commonly round in shape. They can look similar to the scars you can get from chickenpox.
